Uta's Last Interval Session of 2025: 290m Target, 9 Years Old

December 30th. Year-end, and Uta had one more hard session before we could call 2025 done.

This wasn't a race. It was what her coach calls a 'point practice' — a set interval workout rather than an easy jog. Six rounds of 60 seconds running, 60 seconds resting, with a distance target of 290 meters each time. The title of the video says it straight: tough even for adults.

How the day went

It was the last structured workout of the year, so there was a bit of pressure in the air, even for a nine-year-old. Uta is in her last year of elementary school's lower grades still building her base — she's nine, born early in 2016, which in Japan puts her a year ahead of some classmates her age. She's already ranked 10th nationally in the 1000m for third-grade girls from the 2024 school year, so she knows what a hard effort feels like. But year-end fatigue is real, and you could see her bracing herself before the first rep.

The session itself

The workout was simple on paper and brutal in practice: 60 seconds of running, 60 seconds of rest, repeated six times, with 290 meters as the target distance for each interval. That's a real sprint-to-recovery ratio — barely enough time to catch your breath before going again. The question the video title asks is whether she could hold that 290m mark through all six sets, not just the first two or three. Holding pace early is one thing; holding it on rep five or six, when your legs are heavy and the day is already long, is the real test. That's where this kind of practice separates easy effort from meaningful effort.

What a parent took away from it

Watching her grind through the back half of a session like this tells me more than any single race does. Races have adrenaline. Interval sessions don't — you just have to want it on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon with nobody watching but me. What I try to say to her isn't 'run faster.' It's 'keep your form when you're tired,' because that's the skill that actually carries over to races. Heading into the new year, my job is to keep sessions like this calm — show up, give her the target, let her decide how hard to push on the last two reps. That's hers to own, not mine.

That was the last point practice of 2025. Next up is whatever her coach has planned to kick off the new year — probably something just as unglamorous and just as necessary.
